An International Color Chart

born cat-bird

Until the spring we are immersed in the dark.
Cat-bird leaves the egg. This proposal artistic dark bill looks like an installation manipulated.
The ingredients are black, for the pleasure of the monochrome. The mood is not black, it is time to shift. A dandy paper points his nose, collectors Bugs and dark designs ...
Designed to be played in the library, this performance is in the pipeline in two Parisian libraries that are hosting us for rehearsal time: Happy Hour and library Chaptal.

15 - Mont-Sacré-Coeur, a hive

We are the bees of the Universe. We desperately Butinone
honey of the visible
to accumulate in the great golden hive of the invisible
Rainer Maria Rilke - From a Letter

HIVE
The Mount Sacred Heart of Granby has been for thirty-three, from 1932 to 1965, the nerve center of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart of the Province of St. Hyacinthe in 1948 became the province of Granby. It was then a hive that housed the provincial administration and the formation houses named Juvénat, Novitiate, and Scholasticate. Every year, the number of residents in MSC was between 225 and 250 subjects and has even reached in 1954 a record number of 350 brothers and juniors.

Before entering this beehive of activity, recall the main time of its existence and are reviewing a summary description of this imposing building.

Chronology

From 1932 to 1965, the building that fully meets the needs for which it was designed, sustained only minor modifications.

The most significant changes to the property Mount Sacred Heart occur in 1965, following the removal of the scholastics Scholasticate central Montreal. Their wing was then occupied by juniors and Juvénat was leased to the school Best Regional which occupied for nine years.

Subsequently, these are the three wings and available space in the center that will be occupied by the institutional education is embodied in the College of Mount Sacred Heart.

Despite important changes he experienced after 1965, the building retains its original appearance and decor that made his reputation has been little altered by new buildings.

All arable land including gardens, orchard and sugar bush was given to a farmer who is independent, however, observe the development landscaping throughout the property.

The cemetery, built the grotto in 1936, crosses and monuments in place on the property remained intact.

The development of the property See details

The renovation of the property are nearing completion in 1938. They were made to the "elbow grease" and wheelbarrows mainly by the novices and scholastics under the successive direction of brothers Chris and Louis, according to plans prepared by the brothers Auguste and Valerius. The entrance arch erected in 1944 by the town of Granby, was completed in 1947.

A beehive of activity

The Daily Buzz
hive awoke in the morning at 5.00 am and closed his cell last night at 21:30. The day consisted of about four hours of prayer, five hours devoted to meals and recreation and seven hours of class and study.

Every young devoted ten to twenty minutes after each meal to fulfill its task of daily maintenance of the hive.

It was not idle either during the afternoon off. Master's brother met us in the room and with the authority of a military leader, we distributed work. He always had a dozen young people calenders. Master's brother asked the volunteers to raise their hands. It was often complete by the group designations automatically so this task was feared. The time seemed interminable to the calenders. The atmosphere was stifling and they spent the afternoon folding and folding handkerchiefs, sheets, pillowcases or towels.

Tree Centre, which is to say those not assigned to teach in one or the other formation houses, shared the basement workshops. There were, among others, the famous calenders two brothers who were full time.

Brother Francis, shoemaker, manufactured or repaired everything that was leather. He made himself of baseball gloves, as well as leggings and mittens goalie.

In carpentry, Georgius brother was the prime contractor for all work to be done in the house. He made furniture supplements which were requested: tables, chairs, shelves, cabinets, etc..

Philibert and brothers Leonard, older, apply to pick up the old tatty books. The houses in the province also resorted to their services.

Three or four brothers worked continuously in the kitchen under the leadership of brothers Paul and Andrew Cyr, two fountains of guy who felt our silence when fetched dishes.

The sewing workshop where they mended clothing worn or torn envoys of various wings or detected in the wash was located near the parlor and occupied mainly by e porter.

Brother Clement , although a nurse of obedience, was also in charge of the orchard, vines and hives, while one or two other brothers were responsible for all the heavy work outdoors.

Located near the parlor, brother Aldéric, always cheerful, answering the telephone and receiving visitors. He spent his free time at her sewing machine. All clothing repair passed through his hands.

Voice of Mount Sacred Heart was the brother Didier his career Gestetner printer and typographer her full time. In

Novitiate, brother Leonidas was acting as overseer, responsible for all maintenance work which required some expertise.

Chores
Each season brought its trimming chores that often the time spent at recess:

In the spring he was digging gardens and maintain. Throughout the warm season, there were large areas of lawn to mow. We mowed grouping of six to ten cylinder lawnmowers which formed an oblique line across the field, as an invasion of tanks, one impinging on the previous order to leave no duvets. It took more than an hour for the big baseball field and the week after, everything had to start over.

gardens required a constant weeding and evening of warm days, everything was watered by hand using a small watering just three gallons.

weeding paths was much more tedious. Ah quackgrass! Loved that it was scratch. Aisles should be flawless ... for visitors.

picking apples took much of the fall and was open to all sorts of gossip from the top of ladders.

The chore of autumn, was picking potatoes. It takes potatoes to meet throughout the year three hundred young hungry stomachs!

Early in November, teachers from all districts applied, in addition to their daily task, go to the skating rink and making ice. For two days the young kings or had legs filled with ants.

In the winter, every snowfall mobilized all hands to clean the ice. Sometimes pride supreme, it was designated as an assistant professor in charge of the watering during the night.

the spring, gathering sap held several recreations of 16.00. The energy stored in the winter and burst into joyful gossip crackling fantasies.

Celebrations

It was always feast to the MSC. Each party commanded its protocol of preparatory activities, its own vibration and nervousness we stuffed unusual delicacies.

annual celebrations

The Feast of the Sacred Heart

was the pinnacle of all the festivals of the year. It was preceded by a novena of prayer and celebration is called at least three days of intense preparation. The climax of this festival was the torchlight procession.

In turn, the Juvénat, Novitiate or Scholasticate took up the charge of the altar which had to be more beautiful, more original and more imposing than the previous year. It should also draw arches on a passing parade. I remember spent half a day to collect the forest among Griggs currents (lycopodium) of I do not know what plant, which they surrounded the wooden structure of two arches mounted by the brothers of Juvénat. Let us remember that the retain the ephemeris.

's Day Jubilarians

Each province was also celebrated brothers who reached fifty years of religious life. The Golden Jubilee celebration of the three A, Antonius brothers, Antonio and Albertinus. superior general, was particularly well done. Ephemerides include:

August 15-16, 1945 -
Golden Jubilee Celebration of FF. Antonio, Antonius and Albertinus, superior general.

banquet in the Great Hall at noon juniorate; play ("The Substitute") performed at the Academic Hall by the scholastics. The day before, juniors had presented "little blind".

We had strong speeches, addresses or speeches. I mention among other things addresses the Jubilee (with beautiful bouquets
spiritual works of FF. Cesaire, Stefan Urcize and Regis), addresses the missionary brothers Simeon, Guy and Liguori, addresses the jubilee.

This is a day of celebration that will remain etched in the memory well of all young people who attended or participated. (Center)
It was customary to offer a jubilee " Spiritual Bouquet " composed of masses, communions, prayers and sacrifices that were collected from all members of the community. This spiritual bouquet was presented on a richly decorated parchment by one of the finest artists of the province.

Celebrations missionaries

a scenario somewhat similar every year, we celebrated the missionaries, who had just been appointed and those who, after spending five years, has returned u country.

Thus in 1943, we celebrated with great pomp the departure of the six founding missionaries of the mission Haiti. The celebration was preceded by the visit of the Consul of Haiti Collignon accompanied Bishop, the Bishop of a thousand marriages.

In 1944, three other missionaries, whose brother Louis-Bernard Juvénat, joined the founders of the Haiti mission.

In 1945, it was the turn of Brazil to receive its four founding missionaries whose brother Simeon's Scholasticate will be the CEO. In 45

aus if we received the visit of five brothers who came being released from a concentration camp Germany. In 1941, they had sailed to New York on a boat Egyptian, Zamzam, towards Basutoland where they were appointed missionaries. Their boat was sunk by the Germans , they were deported to a concentration camp as prisoners of war and remained there until the end of the war. They we arrived by train from Halifax. They were received in triumph at Mount Sacred Heart. We even sang a Te Deum the chapel before we hear them telling their adventure in the academic hall. There were two days of celebrations in their honor.
At these festivals
first class, add the festival of each ward of the Mount: St. Tarcicius at the school, St. Stanislaus Novitiate and Kotska at St. John Berchmans in Scholasticate. In addition, we celebrated the birthdays of each of the directors of these houses and that of provincial superior. These feasts commanded a banquet, several speeches, a spiritual bouquet and an evening of family. Leave was also attached to these celebrations.

Funeral

The celebration of the funeral of deceased brothers of the province created its own atmosphere and an appropriate protocol.

February 19, 1943, celebrated the funeral of Brother Theodule, the youngest of four brothers who opened a French school of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart in Arthabaska in 1872.

In early 1946, two deaths at an interval of less than ten days have affected the community.

First the death of brother Augustus occurred March 4. Brother Augustus, that all venerated as a saint, was director of Scholasticate.

"Twenty Brothers went to the sick room. When the holy oils were arrivals, F. Augustus had just knowledge. The chaplain gave him the first general anointing then again according to customary rites not finish the last prayers after the last breath of the Holy F. Augustus.

It was 10:30 at night. The Good, the beloved, the merciful, the holy F. Auguste made his noble soul to God. The orphan Scholasticate became the best of fathers. "(Chronicles scholasticate)

And on March 13, it was the brother Albertus, Director of Studies, died overnight in his room. M. Labarre, in charge of normal schools by the Department of Education, came to his funeral.

Special events
He came several times to get to the Mount of important characters. Include:

October 18, 1942 - We receive the visit of Bishop Antoniutti, Apostolic Delegate to Canada.

Consul of Haiti in 1943 and Bishop Collignon

August 26, 1954 - most solemn moment for our community: His Eminence Cardinal Valeri, papal legate to the Congress of Canadian religious visits us.

January 7, 1947 The mayor of the city, Mr. Horace Boivin, was also received with great fanfare by the Mount Sacred Heart on the occasion of his decoration by the pope as a Knight of the Order of St. Gregory.

The Cultural and Religious Affairs

In addition to the provincial administration, there were at Mount Sacred Heart several teams engaged in cultural and religious specific.

Recruitment Recruitment was a source of constant concern and mobilizing energy and collaboration of the entire community under pressure from recruiters who remained at Mount Sacred Heart.

We gave annual goals of 75, 100 and 125 new juniors each year. In collaboration with Voice we stood honor rolls which were schools that had led to more recruits Juvénat. We honored the brothers who drove a new recruit to Juvénat Their name, their recruits and their date of entry were meticulously recorded in Voice issued monthly to all the houses in the province. It was to recruiters a place of honor at the table when they came Juvénat drive a new recruit or visit those who were already there.

From the sixth year, the best candidates were identified by recruiters, classroom visits and monitored closely during their seventh year. Parents were encountered, their conditions were made and to avoid poaching from seminars or other communities, there was a rush to enter before the end of the school year and the candidate rescued. Thus, the entry lists at Juvénat reveal that there were entrances staggered throughout the year with peaks at Easter and the end of August. For several years, even opened at Easter, a special class of seventh year to accommodate new hires.

techniques for recruiting Canadian hockey club had to draw on methods used for years by the brothers recruiters.

The Office of Studies

Scholasticate The Mount Sacred Heart was recognized by the Department of Public Instruction as a Normal School. The DIP then issued two patents teaching the complementary patents and patent Superior. Later, circa 50, we modified the program and was awarded a patent A and B respectively allowed to teach high school and elementary.

After leaving the Scholasticate, the brothers continued their studies. It was the task of the Director of Studies who resided at Mount Sacred Heart coordinate studies and youth training and brothers who were anxious to complete their qualification as a teacher or to acquire additional licenses of Professional Studies or university. Continuing education was in force in communities long before the Parent Report.

The Director of Studies was the community representative to the DIP. In June, for two or three days, the room was furnished Scholasticate to receive candidates for examinations set by the DIP also ensured that the monitoring and correction. The graduation was celebrated with emphasis. See Teaching and Studies at the Brothers of the Sacred Heart by Jean-Claude Ethier SC

The LMES
Towards the '40s, we had created Scholasticate Missionary League. This group of Scholastic's mission was to promote the missionary spirit among youth in training.

Every year for a week, it was an impressive exhibition missionary. The whole room of Juvénat was mobilized for one week through kiosks illustrating various aspects of life in mission countries,
At the end of this week, we organized a bazaar that was well-attended by all residents and also by the brothers of the region.

The Dramaphiles

Before leTNM and "The Companions of St. Lawrence Mont Sacré Oeur had his own theater troupe who had forged his name on the anvil of two Greek roots:" The Dramaphiles ", that is to say, 'The friends of the drama'.

Several specialized employees in makeup, scenery and lighting had joined the troupe who had a board of three members and actors to freelance high reputation. We climbed and two or three pieces per annum at festive requisitions which varied little from year to year.

The highlight of any celebration at Mount was indeed the evening of academic family in the room. These evenings included singing solo or in chorus, some classical pieces performed on the piano for four hands by a duo that included most of the time the brother Cyprian, skits, and especially the play in three or five acts staged in great secrecy by (See the list of parts that were played to the MSC.) They remained in the memories and staying still in the Top strongest strokes heart for the arts stage. That was before the advent of television. See The list of plays performed by Dramaphiles

Voice of Mount Sacred Heart

The Voice of Mount Sacred Heart is a monthly community founded in 1928. She published thirty-nine years, ten issues per year from September to June His last number appeared in June 1968. How you present it? What should bring out in his eulogy?

A MONUMENT
This glaring obvious, Voice first appears as a monument of publishing. For his first volume: more than twenty thousand pages, divided into thirty-nine volumes of ten issues a year for nearly forty years.

The disproportion between the gigantic and smallness of means who have achieved is amazing. It was David against Goliath, almost fly that drives the boat, the mouse that frees the lion from his bowels. Twenty stencils miles wax that is perforated by registered letter to the tape at your fingertips or stylus is serious, stroke by stroke, to fine tune the presentation. This must be done! And it took all these mimeograph stencils for Gestetner manual to learn about two hundred copies per month. Phew! Just thinking about it, I spotted all the fingers of his multicolored inks. All the work of layout and publication was provided largely by the brother Didier. What

tenacity! And I think the brother Dussault last November I copied them all in less than five minutes. See Summary of publications of The Voice

Life is like a bicycle;
must advance in order not to lose balance.
[ Albert Einstein - Life ]

Scholasticate is quiet this morning in late June 1947. I'm sitting at a typewriter, in the refectory. To the right of the piano, I hit. I type my life plan.

is an established custom. At the end of training time, it should prepare its plan of life as a soldier who goes to war down on paper his will. Guarantee the future life, protection against the dangers of religious life in the world outside the sacred precincts of Mt.

So true, in September, at the age of 17, I will be responsible for a class. Where? I know from reading the academic persuasions in the room, before the whole community, the new provincial, brother Gaetan. Indeed, the previous fall, the general chapter meeting in Paradise has played musical chairs. Our provincial brother Jehoshaphat, there was elected Vicar General. He was succeeded here by his brother's childhood, brother Gaetan. Arriving at

Scholasticate, August 28 I learned that I was ranked in Complementary II. Ten newly professed are in the same situation. We jump squarely During the Complementary I. We take the examinations on the DIP at the end of the school year in order to obtain a certificate of further education. And presto! In September in the schools!

A combination of the Director of Studies before they die. By compiling the results of our holiday courses and noting our year of novitiate as religion classes, we had enough credits to 'jump' the Complementary I. I was flattered. But this was short lived.
In Scholasticate, prices were so new and so interesting that I would have liked to spend one more year and even spend three years as was done for groups from 1938 to 1942. So to meet the requirements of the Ministry of Education of Ontario, we had to obtain a graduate degree to obtain a teaching permit. As we wanted to settle more in Ontario, there was put the packet. In years 38 to 43, the brothers, whose brother Camille, my uncle, who had obtained their Bachelor of Arts after three years of seminary, received an obedience for one of the houses in Ontario. This urgency is filled, it was now the demands of Quebec need to respond. Quebec's requirements were less. Brother Albertus, Director of Studies, had quickly found that combined to obtain their Certificate of scholastics after one additional year of study at Scholasticate.

That's why I'm typing so fast my life plan.

What a wonderful year! Everything is bathed in oil. Fervor, energized by eight days of retreat and the greeting ceremony attended by family, remained somehow. Brother Cyprian, again my teacher and spiritual director, watched to keep the flame high. Especially at Scholasticate, our training included a new dimension. These were the studies and obtaining teaching certificates that were the subject of much attention.

And on this side it was wonderful too. With Brother Alban, we discovered the foundations of the laws of nature in the physical sciences.

English, led by Brother Lawrence, we flirted with Evangeline by Longfellow. In addition, Brother Lawrence, who did not count his time, gave us ten minutes each way to write a short text our thought in English. I wrote the same one every day. I corrected them assiduously. I had the feeling of progress in learning a language that made me sweat apples (apple, a-pi-pi) in eighth grade.

French courses, combined with teaching, were spent largely writing exercises that brother Marcel conscientiously corrected. Subjects were the arguments of the program of teaching that we should support the review of educational DIP essay. With no ounce of pedagogy, nor experience, nor coconut, we should elaborate on the controversial issue of the utility of homework as a learning or determine how mental arithmetic could form the spirit or mathematical : Success in Education It takes a little knowledge, a good dose of education and a lot of dedication.

models we were given. We studied them and we trained to reproduce the form of essay.

From time to time, we had debates on these topics. Was a scholastic and defend a thesis another object.

These debates where there was fighting blood and nail to assert its truth produced a curious effect on my life as a believer. The germ of a tough question that will be resolved until several years later. What is truth? If I can defend as well as for the cons, doing one or the other my belief, how to claim the existence of absolute truths? Where was the truth of various religious beliefs that each defended so fiercely? Question of the duration of a flash but left its mark on me forever.
Back to
mo No life plan. Do not miss or do not take the risk to miss any, I head down deep into the project. I took two days to lay and I decided to type in a lined notebook. To do this, we must remove the leaves, fold them before introducing them into the machine, number the pages and place them in the correct order in the book. It is more complicated. It's worth it. This book as a guide or reminder or warranty will last me a lifetime!

This plan is structured as a plan of building. There is the roof framing and coverings.

The roof is my ideal life: glorifying Beatissima Trinitas. The walls are my conditions: my vows, the life of faith, prayer, community life, education and leisure time. These are the pillars of spiritual life that I learned at the Novitiate.

coatings are all the tips or tricks that will keep me warm life of union with God and deal with weather and leaks that could compromise it.

It praised the plan of life as a broker advertises its insurance policies. That's how I see it. And also as a protocol. Predict how we want to behave any eventuality: in front of the warmth, against the temptations of flesh, annoying colleagues, superiors dominant, the grumpy old brothers.

My guiding principle is simple. I took it in the Rules. "A brother will be able to make any " and the example that embodies the whole, the bar chair repair. Everything, as vast as the world, but down to earth in the concrete of everyday life, like a bar chair off.

Glorify the Trinity my teaching. Very nice in the books but when you have to repeat tables of addition and multiplication to children once learned the table for three, the Trinity may be far away.

Let's talk about my teaching practice. One week, five long days in a class of fourth year. One brother Leonce School St. Eugene. A brother

Leonce leading his class on the finger and the eye, especially when the eye because he is no longer in the classroom, or you do not see the monitor through the window glass of the door is a mess. All the subtleties of the dissipation will explode. And I do not know how to hold the reins of these young foals frisky. I can not quell. And occasionally, the brother Alfred, responsible for teaching practice, gets his nose in the door. I feel condemned as the Last Judgement.

's brother Marcel has given us a few tricks of pedagogy. He showed us how to capture the interest and attention of children in the explanation of the Catechism No. 253. Understanding of the twists that make the story sensible signs instituted by Jesus Christ ... but there are no twists and no No. 253 to explain that week!

and math for addition and multiplication, there the novelty of flash cards. They are all displayed above the table, half-side response, half blind side. Today, I suspect that the principle (Academic) who supports this invention is the history of subliminal perception. The teacher keeps a deck of cards in his hand and must present the blind side to the class at the speed of moving pictures and in turn, students must answer correctly. And it works, I've seen him do. But I can not hold both handles all control of the operation. It is worse than Handling of Girl Guides and bacula when unloading hay at the main fork . I bordering on panic. The teacher enters. Students will once again become holy images in starched "cornstach (cornstarch).

And during five days sj'ai a thousand such follies. Others recounted their exploits. They loved teaching. I do not. I said nothing. Profound doubts about my abilities as teacher brother, about my vocation, crashing into me like signs "For Sale " a minefield.

My plan living, security, as a remedy. I am writing : " A second obligation is to make me love my students. " - " They must not neglect said Rule to attract the esteem, respect and affection of children to win them to Jesus Christ. "

To achieve this, in my life plan I write "I will be patient with my students and I will radiate joy to them. " Jesus said" Leave come to me grandchildren. "It resolved , I am a teacher, God help me, it's his will. " I put in the foreground in my classroom the virtue of gentleness and virtue of patience. "

I continue to type, a flat slips between the lines that claim to predict everything, build everything for the glory of Beatissima!

My wandering back to my jumping the start of the year. Is this really a good decision we have blown up a year? It would be so nice to continue to study! The chemistry lab, after that of physics, fascinates me. But God wills it, he must go, clap! Exactly

in the chapter of the vow of obedience, I type: "The religious obedience is transported to heaven in the arms of his superior "
and I continue with
"He was obedient until the death of the cross. " " Obedience is also the most effective and easiest to fill the end of my mission: to glorify the Trinity I wrote in response.
And the argument: " The greatest glory I can give him is the fulfillment of his divine will, again, the perfect submission is not without self-forgetfulness so pleasing to God. "
And Belief: " should I be arrogant enough to reject a way that I promised to observe and that gives me such valuable benefits? Not ! "And
resolution " I want to fight the pride, the main enemy of obedience. The pride that is criticize and judge the orders of superiors, who takes pride in our obedience to the divine and puts humans with considerations and whims. "With this

insurance naive, I keep typing. Typing, I'm rambling again. Insurance ...!

Everything is quiet this morning. It has only just recovering from the great stress at the beginning of the month. The 4.5 and 6 June, we spent the dreaded exams PID. It was very stressful for me.

First a week of intense excitement to any review, the panic of the last moments before the gaping holes of memory and ideas, feverish race to teachers for further explanations, the screeching of chairs and tables that are aligned in the room the night before, while we not sleeping yet.

The fateful morning, the solemn one unsealed envelopes, long hours to write, without notes or dictionary, under the impassive eyes of foreign supervisors in the great hall of Scholasticate sitting at a desk close and severe, as an awkward silence that allowing only the rustle of leaves that were running slow and not that glide between rows. The panic of the five-minute statement announced, then the hours of anguish in the pincers of s entiments chess difficult to loosen.

After three days of Friday, there was one week Herculean Outside: work, hiking, sports, etc.. Any reading is banned, there was throughout this week that the physical ... and prayers whispered by lips that have slept well. Gradually, there was a calm in the arteries with free evenings to watch the nighthawks who plunge with cries of victory to the horizons of the sunset in her pink sheets firmament.

This morning was very calm. I continue typing. I type this, my warranty, my life insurance policy, my protocol is also a consideration, considering what my learned the supernatural life that I pass the good-natured smile of the Lord. The true test, practical test of life will begin in early September before a classroom of kids brimming with life.

I type: "Gloria Dei homo vivens - Da robur auxilium iron.
is the final point of my life and plan my life at Mount Sacred Heart.

13 - The novitiate, hothouse of spiritual life

The spiritual master:
a gateway to a world where appearances are exceeded ...
a path without dogma, helps us to see rather than thinking
...

Life at Mount Sacred Heart is in itself a bath while immersed in the spiritual life.

places are reminders everywhere pitted the Christian mysteries. On ense MBLE property, there are at least three cross the road, there is also reminiscent of the grotto apparitions of Mary to St. Bernadette Soubirous, a booth dedicated to St. Joseph and a statue of St. Michael the Archangel terrace which always our demons of his spear.

Inside, in addition to the large Chapel open to all, the Novitiate and Scholasticate have their own chapel and his oratory has Juvénat. At the end of the corridors, on flights of stairs in the classroom or in the various recreation and dining halls, there are statues everywhere of the Sacred Heart or Our Lady.

When we cross the central corridor on the second floor, a succession of pairs of eyes look at us with kindness. Characters who pose, colors and cold seriousness of the saints in pictures, it does lack the halo. These are the paintings of all the superiors general of the community since its founding.

Everywhere, in every room, holy images are used as decoration.

There is also the interplay of patterns embedded in the course of days and seasons that are on the agenda exercises daily maintenance of one's spiritual health. One type of stationary bike: the habit of signing with holy water upon entering every room and leaving them, that of Grace and Thanksgiving and concludes that open each meal-snack-not to mention, that prayers before each classroom, the cross paths on Friday and that visits to the chapel after almost every meal. There is also, in season, visiting the cemetery or to the cave. And whatnot?

As cutting time, the Mount Sacred Heart follows the liturgical calendar and celebrates all s nonworking holidays therein: All Saints, Immaculate Conception, Christmas Eve, Christmas Easter. It adds the Feast of the Sacred Heart which is above a novena of prayers and being celebrated with a bang.

The first Friday of each month, the month of Mary (May) and the Rosary (October), the periods of Lent and Advent, the feast of St. Joseph, patron of the Institute (St. John the Evangelist, St. Margaret Mary Alacoque) St. Blaise (February 3) and the blessings tion Gorge, St. Catherine and pulls, the Holy Guardian Angels ... and I forget, are the subject of a special devotion.

Each day, were read to the life of the saint's day and lunch, before Deo Gratias , délieur language, we read a passage from the Imitation of Jesus Christ. The Angelus is recited rings and lunch before dinner, while the singing of the Salve Regina closes the day. The Cor Jesu Ametur, rigor to rise, will also open several of our meetings. The song "Driven of Love "performed at the end of our community meetings and gives the heart a boost for the whole family.

And there is especially the saints whose "odor of sanctity" pervades the entire Mount Sacred Heart. Among the main ones that have marked my memory of their icons include:

Brother Louis-Felix, a former province, the last of the French brothers. He spent his long days at the chapel in its shell beads.

Brother Irenaeus, the respected old man with limited mobility that we saw the beautiful summer days, sitting on a stool, applied with patience to pull weeds angel of one of the many paths that cut out the landscape of Mt.

Brother Albertus who, on arrival of each new juniors meticulously noted in his book of prayers the names of family members. The names of his notebook every morning were pinned on a clothesline of his prayer.

Brother Augustus enjoyed the reputation of a saint animated by an intense inner life, which his premature death will be confirmed for the edification of all.

Brother Cyprian that everyone recognized as a saint and a scholar whose holiness was so deeply rooted in humility she hid her wonderful qualities as a man and a scholar.

Brother Jehoshaphat, provincial, who showed the unusual concentration chapel.

Brother Polycarp, the young, namesake of the first superior being put on the ramp leading to the canonization, also takes on the appearance of a saint.

And the brother Wenceslas, servant to the orchard, whose austerity and shyness had shaped profile of canonized saints.

And that other, real unsuspected, which is the holy Nitouche chuckled and some athletes divine ways that marked our trail novices on the way to Santiago.

And we must add by way of condiment, speeches and statements accompanying all community celebrations: anniversaries, fiestas for juniors, novices, scholastics and their masters, the obedience, death, snacks diploma etc ... All this talk oozed the spiritual recognition into heaven, the tributes to him, not to mention the little-lesson exhortation moral spiritual. There was a language "religiously correct" without fail.

These high places of the versatility of the spiritual life have imparted to our attitudes, our thoughts and our acting out an indelible character that we will remain significant despite the ravages of time and the crash of upheavals to come.

Novitiate, a training school for spiritual life

Driver change
is 12:15. We are in the refectory, somewhat behind the usual time.

After Grace, we were beckoned to sit down. The dishes are waiting on trolleys. At master's table, there is the brother Cyprian in his usual place beside him and the brother Florentien.

Brother Baunard, sub-master, gets up and tells the story, oftentimes reprinted this apprentice pilot, flight test, after carefully and successfully applied the techniques of complex flight, search altitude, turns all the steps, frantically leafing through the manual to initiate landing. A small note on the last page informs: For landing techniques, see Volume II. "And the brother

Baunard, happy mystery of its effect, concludes by saying: This is the situation we find ourselves now at the Novitiate. Welcome to our new brother Florentien Master, who holds the Volume II and thank you for the Brother Cyprian led us so well since the beginning of the novitiate. Hungry belly has no ears. Deo gratias .

We were appalled. Barely an hour earlier, in fact, the Brother Provincial had met throughout the academic community in the room. He had important information to us. After the death of brother Augustus, Director of Scholastic, which occurred March 4, he had to appoint a replacement.

Probably between the branches, it had blown the name of Brother Cyprian as the most suitable to replace the venerable brother Augustus. But then who would replace his brother Cyprien? Gossip of the most unusual fighting mad wings. We talked about the brother Valerius, this former master of novices, in 1932, had opened the novitiate at Mount Sacred Heart. The name of the brother Gideon, recruiter, also infiltrated with the currents of air. The Holy Spirit seemed out of breath. And we novices were cut off by our silence the rumors of corridor.

Solemn, brother Jehoshaphat opened the meeting with an invocation to the Holy Spirit. As a result, the brother Cyprian was proclaimed the new Director of Studies and Scholasticate.

After warmly applauded by the scholastics was expected after not without some trepidation. It was a surprise. Florentien brother was young, and professor at Juvénat three years ago. It was appreciated, but then to think he could take the important post of master of novices there was a margin that the gossip did not dare cross. The applause was slower to come. In novice, emotions Home clashed with those who preside over the farewell. After the rep

aces, two brothers Masters (old and new) took turns speaking. Of gratitude and words of comfort. Everything according to the proprieties of the situation. However, I selected the brother Cyprian was still at our disposal to any form of consultation that you want and Florentien brother, nice player, were thanked politely. He saw all those who wanted a great advantage for their continued good spiritual formation. "Brother Cyprian," he said laughing, "you have accumulated enough hours Steering you do not need the Volume II to bring your subjects safely. "

This arrangement does not fall in deaf ears. I was comforted by the thought that I would not start again for a few months with another spiritual director.

And underlying that accommodate common sense point I saw the opportunity to wreak a little vengeance mothballed since my discomfiture asymptotic.

Brother Florentien entered the novitiate with the enthusiasm of a teenager ready to change everything.

whole atmosphere was changed in the Novitiate. Same time, same regulations, same habits, but another scene, a different look.

First the gray-green overalls replaced the gray-black cassocks for any use. Traditionally, novices and brothers scraping their cassocks for sleep at night. Florentien brother bought two dozen gray-green overalls coveralls, as those that are employees of the road. Therefore, all outside work and some more dirty work inside were no longer made by novices and the cassock-like monks but by civilians-like mercenaries.

was spring. The greenhouse overflowed new plants, preparing flower beds and garden design were classified as current priorities. This work not only occupied a portion of Wednesday and Saturday afternoons but often four-hour recess. Sometimes, emergencies commanded during an absence or even leave the course in spirituality or history of the Institute for all. So much so that some brothers from the Novitiate Center spoke with a smile full of malice, as religious "an excellent school of agriculture."

And inside, a room fuck all the basement was converted into a storeroom. He pulled all believed that wines fermented in plastic barrels and was served on holidays at the table of the brethren of the Centre.

conferences also changed their tone. Instead of explaining the wonders of God and the tortuous paths of spiritual life, brother Florentien showed us pieces of real life brothers in the houses face the daily demands of work and those of community life. Opened our eyes and ears stood. Was the real thing. It is easier and more enjoyable to hear of men of God.

These conferences, however, brushed the black picture of life in homes. Community life and it seemed difficult to maintain our ideal of religious life almost impossible.

I exercised my right to continue my spiritual direction with brother Cyprian. My meetings with the brother Florentien were limited to regular monthly interviews.

Stimulated by this whirlwind of activities and news, the weather took us quickly towards the end of the novitiate: religious profession. Four months lived under the tutelage of Brother Florentien passed without too much turbulence. Brother Florentien be won quickly affection of all novices. I was standing a little apart, protected by my reservations. I was rather critical. I found myself, though very young, to find myself under the skin of old grumpy monks, bothered by the breaking of traditions and habits.

Brother Florentien was novice master for fourteen years, longer than most of his predecessors. He made his mark and assured the younger brothers he headed from 1946 to 1965 a very good preparation for their life ... brother-educator in schools.

School Spiritual Life
When spirituality is the fuel-novitiate batch of 1945-46?

I keep my novitiate be remembered as a time of grace, that of a wonderful school that introduced me to the art of self-knowledge, that of emotional control and the even more difficult a relentless quest for meaning. I was fortunate to know two very different spiritual masters. One, Brother Cyprian, who led us to heaven, and another brother Florentien which directs us to the land of the living.

Recipe Cyprian: the art of lasting relationships
What
great guru that brother Cyprian.
richness of life lies in its meaning than its achievements. Brother Cyprian was a man fascinated with the basics. In his lectures and interviews he was trying to camp out the aiming point of our spiritual life and the very fact of our religious life. For him, life was his supreme sense, even here, as in a relationship alive and warm, always renewed with God incarnated in Jesus Christ.

For him, God was not the Supreme Being to whom we must offer the sacrifice of his life, but the father of tenderness, the brother of every day, the companion of all activities. The Beatissima Trinitas , focal point of his fervor was his Holy Family, the place and the general picture in which life was good and relaxing. It was his heaven.

This sky, he contrived to let us discover and we'll do lunch. Attentive to us, he spoke little. However, he guided our eyes and gave us the pleasure of our own research and our own discoveries.

We do not train as it builds a statue in his own model. He attended our self. The tools used to accomplish this shaping of our being (faithful to the vocabulary of the time he spoke to our soul than of our being) had nothing sophisticated or extravagant. It was the same as those who always had a great variety of carved saints, canonized or not prayer, mortification, meditation and silence. The

prayer was simply a contact with the God who could give a multitude of names and titles used interchangeably. It was to find the hat that suits us most. Instantaneous contact, split into morse code, voiceless as heat, as a global reach ... contact. If it was not, as I do most of the time, patience, repetition, endurance, and do not panic ... presence is a contact, both north and south through all degrees of warmth . The

mortification in his eyes was not crowned masochism. It was the practice as preparation for grooming a romantic encounter. Mortification of the eyes, do not look out of the classroom windows or a door ajar in the corridors ... to bring attention to discipline a presence; mortification of taste, good way to discover the divine present in all flavors, and the whole litany of mortification came to lowercase single file for a guard to you more and more dignified in the presence of his Sovereign. Mortification also our judgments always too easy. "Wherever there are humans there is Hommers" he told us often. He braked and convictions that were not our responsibility and relativized the importance of our failures. The

meditation, a spiritual nourishment for the mind of God. It was not so, as many volumes we proposed to organize a tight reasoning resulted in three stages to a conclusion, or even the motivation to frothed like the "pep talk" preachers, not simply an exercise that develops and maintains the intelligence and taste of the spiritual truths of intelligence faith. Just as a scientist can have the taste and interest to read and reflect on the discoveries of science, old and new.

He suggested we find the writings and authors who elicited the most interest for us. The texts of the liturgy could be very feeders. There we often commented with the clarity of his intellect and spirit of a discoverer. The

silence was like the hothouse of spiritual germination. It was not the Novitiate disciplinary rule. Brother Master did not recall the instructions of silence. He had managed to create an atmosphere and maintain an attitude which maintained silence as an atmosphere. Not the silence of the void but the high altitude of the air we breathe, which nourishes and purifies. I never found elsewhere, except during retreats, the atmosphere of peace and serenity that prevailed at the Novitiate. I think there is collusion between the silence and fed one who rocked me in an embryonic state.

I do not know how, brother Cyprian had an appetite for this new world for me. My apprenticeship was to navigate as weightless component with my own burdens, and to initiate me in the use of instruments on board. He assisted me with patient tenderness of a father.

The sacrifices and mortifications, even prayer, do not derive their values for the suffering they generate but, like physical exercises, they are worth as long as they give the soul the quality, flexibility, fineness and strength physical exercises give the muscles and body health.

And the role of Cyprian, guardian of the spiritual life, was to maintain a presence in this daily training to correct the excesses or choking as well as support to ensure its persistence. I see the line of novices who, after evening prayers before bedtime, taking a minute or two for him to report on their achievements or failures of their spiritual and receive appropriate sedatives his mouth. The

relational life is a perpetual recommencement. And this is also the spiritual life that lends itself to all the tricks and all tips. She does not care routine and lifestyle. Without putting the ax in the habits of religious life that so easily installed on any level whatsoever, brother Cyprian made me see that other ways than the "strict adherence" led to "countries in above. " Change and mobility are the constants of life and religious life as all life has to reinvent itself at any time.

means u or reused for shaping the soul were very simple. Those on board: the plan this month including specific objectives, review particular daily practice of ejaculations nourished by adding the constant reading and writing the most thoughtful Foster for 'beggars' in the sense that we claimed be or become.

Brother Cyprian was my spiritual director for over fifteen years. I was so clumsy and so tough that he failed to make me get up high in the spiritual spheres. However, I am indebted to him forever and a certain serenity that I have managed to maintain despite numerous turbulence in the overview of our lifetimes. Releases that have come slowly are also largely due to the sharpness of his knife and his skill as a surgeon experienced. The islands of peace coming to settle in life are the result of patient effort and long struggles. Brother Cyprian was a peacemaker "sustainable."

revenue Florentien - gay vivens

Each song in his life reveals his 'major' and 'minor'. The 'major' or mark that Brother Florentien gave its formation seems to be that of the community. By temperament he was, I think, more a man of community that a man of inner life. The values of heart and harmony prevailed over those of the mind and compliance.

This appears very clearly dominant in the type of organization he established in the Novitiate. More than the silence, he promoted the communication and collaboration. Gifted with a natural empathy conquering, he was able to develop a sense of family that exploded in the evenings of family and extended family in the community who live in homes where the brothers are mobilized by the daily grind of the animation school and the thrill of living together.

The training given by the brother Florentien should prepare ourselves to our real life brother of a teacher in a real community where the Saints rubbed the jaded, young, old, active, grannies. The spiritual life embodied in faithfulness to his vocation by the strict observance of rules and practice of fraternal charity. It was good value, practical, complementary to those that could connect the Brother Cyprian and probably also more marketable to youth sixteen years who aspired to a career in the Institute.

By choice, and perhaps also by a little swagger, I have not tasted the personal spiritual direction might have to give me the brother Florentien. I do not remember either of his thought or the importance he attached to prayer, religious life, the wishes, the observance of the rule. He did not speak in terms evangelical and spiritual. The vows of poverty, obedience and chastity were sometimes explained by concrete examples from his experience in school Top with the good brother Edmond or extracts of his correspondence with the young brothers.

Brother Florentien we formed the ultrasonic wave radiating from which emanated from his fullness of being. Saint Irenaeus expressed in four words the essence of spiritual life: "Gloria Dei homo vivens " The glory of God is man fully alive. Florentien brother was a "man alive" in every sense of the word. Such was his charisma. He did well his talent grow. We can say that I prefer apples to oranges, but not the flavor of the apple is over that of orange.

Teilhard de Chardin, who saw in the field of powerful incarnation of the spiritual virtues of the cosmogenesis noogenesis, stressed the importance of keeping well in hand and in harmony these two lines of evolution and growth present in every being. I consider myself very lucky to have had at the beginning of my religious life, to commune with these two poles well defined and embodied in the brothers Cyprian and Florentien.
